San Antonio State Hospital Campus Reuse Masterplan
A successful partnership with HKS and their talented team of designers and leaders.
The San Antonio State Hospital 30-acre campus originally opened its doors in the 1890’s. Bexar County, the county in which the hospital resides, commissioned a study of how the vast land and existing buildings on the state hospital grounds can be re-purposed once the new State Hospital, located in south San Antonio, is complete in 2024. In partnership with HKS, hX developed a masterplan for the existing San Antonio State Hospital Campus through the reuse of existing buildings and development of available space. In addition to increasing Inpatient capacity, the masterplan includes a campus-style recovery village that addresses identified gaps in the communities continuum of care and improving social determinants of health for its residents.
