Nemours Children’s Hospital
A successful partnership with architecture+ and their talented team of designers and leaders.
The Nemours hospital system has been providing pediatric care since the Alfred I. duPont Institute opened in 1940. Initially focused on orthopedic care, the system has significantly expanded over the past 80 years to offer a broad spectrum of general and specialty services. It now operates in Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Florida.
Recognizing the growing need to continue its legacy of excellence in pediatrics by addressing both the mental and physical health of children, Nemours Children’s Hospital in Wilmington, DE, explored the expansion of its services to include hospital-based behavioral health care. To achieve this, Nemours proposed the establishment of a comprehensive behavioral health service through three interconnected initiatives: a behavioral health pod within the Emergency Department, a dedicated inpatient unit, and partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient programs.
To ensure that the in-house planning to date adequately anticipated the needs, opportunities, and challenges associated with these three projects, Nemours engaged the architecture+/human eXperience consultant team to conduct data analysis, operational consulting, space programming, and test fits for representational space programs.
